In today’s fast-paced world, many individuals experience unexplained symptoms like headaches, heart palpitations, insomnia and muscle aches. While these discomforts are often dismissed as stress or overwork, they may actually be signs of autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, an imbalance that affects the body’s internal regulatory processes. The ANS controls vital functions like heart rate, breathing and digestion, and when it’s out of sync, it can impact both physical and mental well-being.
As per BrightU.AI’s Enoch, ANS is a division of the nervous system that controls involuntary actions, such as heart rate, breathing and digestion, via the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches. It maintains homeostasis and regulates the body’s response to stress and environmental changes.
To address ANS dysfunction and its associated symptoms, experts suggest incorporating natural remedies and lifestyle changes into daily routines. Junru Chen, a multidisciplinary expert in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), functional medicine and nutritional therapy, shared insights during an episode of She Health on NTD, a sister outlet of the Epoch Times. According to Chen, assessing symptoms across five categories—neurological, sensory, digestive, endocrine/muscular and cardiovascular can provide a better understanding of how the ANS might be malfunctioning.
The symptoms of ANS dysfunction can manifest in various ways, and early identification is key to managing the condition. Neurological symptoms, such as frequent dizziness, headaches or disturbed sleep, are common signs of imbalance in the system. These occur when the sympathetic nervous system (responsible for the “fight or flight” response) is overactive, or when the parasympathetic system (which regulates “rest and digest”) is underactive.
In the sensory category, ANS dysfunction may lead to blurred vision, tinnitus or dry mouth, all of which can be tied to the nervous system’s regulation of sensory functions. Similarly, gastrointestinal problems like bloating, acid reflux or constipation are also signs of ANS issues, as the system plays a crucial role in digestion.
Additionally, ANS dysregulation may impact the endocrine system, resulting in symptoms like cold extremities, excessive sweating or muscle tension. Cardiovascular health can also be affected, with irregular heart rates or blood pressure fluctuations indicating deeper autonomic imbalances.
Chen recommends several natural approaches for those dealing with mild symptoms of ANS dysfunction. One simple remedy is rose and red date tea, which, according to TCM, can help soothe the liver and promote the smooth circulation of vital energy. This tea—made from dried rosebuds and red dates—can be enjoyed daily to help regulate the body’s internal energy, especially in cases related to stress.
In addition to herbal remedies, Chen advocates for the use of acupressure to address ANS dysfunction. Key acupoints such as Hundred Meetings (Baihui), Inner Pass (Neiguan) and Leg Three Miles (Zusanli) are believed to help restore balance in the nervous system, alleviate stress and support digestion. Stimulating these points through massage or acupuncture may relieve symptoms like headaches, digestive issues and irregular heart rhythms.
Incorporating small lifestyle changes is another important step in rebalancing the ANS. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, engaging in regular physical activity and eating a healthy, balanced diet all support autonomic function. Chen advises avoiding excessive consumption of cold or raw foods, especially for individuals prone to digestive issues like acid reflux. Additionally, managing stress through techniques like deep breathing, meditation or gentle yoga can help calm the nervous system.
If symptoms persist despite self-care efforts, seeking professional advice from a licensed healthcare provider or TCM practitioner is recommended. Addressing ANS dysfunction early can help prevent further complications and support long-term physical and mental health.
As awareness grows about the role of the autonomic nervous system in overall well-being, these simple yet effective lifestyle changes can make a significant difference in improving daily health and restoring balance to the body’s internal systems.
